EMDR is not a quick fix — it is a structured, phased approach that ensures you are prepared, supported, and resourced throughout the healing process.

History Taking — Your therapist learns your history and identifies target memories.

Preparation — You develop coping tools and resourcing strategies

Assessment — The target memory is identified and a negative belief associated with it is named.

Desensitization — Bilateral stimulation begins while you hold the memory in mind.

Installation — A positive, adaptive belief is strengthened.

Body Scan — Residual tension or sensation in the body is addressed.

Closure — Every session ends with stabilization and grounding.

FAQs

Does EMDR actually work? Is there research behind it?

Yes — EMDR is one of the most extensively researched trauma treatments available. It is recognized and recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), the American Psychiatric Association, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and numerous other global health bodies for the treatment of PTSD and trauma. Decades of clinical research support its effectiveness across a wide range of presentations.

What if one family member doesn't want to come?

No — and this is one of the things that makes EMDR different from traditional talk therapy. You don't need to narrate your trauma in detail for EMDR to work. Your therapist will ask you to hold a memory or image in mind while bilateral stimulation is applied, but you are not required to verbalize everything that comes up. Many clients find this a relief, especially those for whom talking about trauma has felt retraumatizing in the past.

What does bilateral stimulation feel like?

Bilateral stimulation (BLS) typically involves guided eye movements, tapping, or audio tones that alternate from side to side. Most clients describe it as surprisingly gentle — even calming. It doesn't feel intense or medical. Your therapist will explain and practice BLS with you before any processing begins, and you can always pause or stop at any time.

How many EMDR sessions will I need?

Is EMDR only for PTSD?

This depends on the nature and complexity of what you're working through. Some clients experience significant shifts in as few as 6–12 sessions for a single-incident trauma. Complex or developmental trauma — including childhood wounds, family-of-origin issues, or prolonged adverse experiences — typically requires a longer course of treatment. Your therapist will give you a realistic picture after your initial assessment.

While EMDR was originally developed for PTSD, it is now widely used for anxiety, depression, grief, phobias, disordered eating, negative core beliefs, relationship trauma, attachment wounds, and more. If you've struggled with a persistent negative belief about yourself — "I'm not enough," "I'm unlovable," "I'm not safe" — EMDR can be a powerful way to shift it at the root.
