Individual therapy is a dedicated space — just for you. No distractions, no performing, no trying to make others comfortable. At Embody Therapy & EMDR, individual psychotherapy is a collaborative process where you and your therapist work together to understand the roots of what's keeping you stuck, and build a path forward that feels authentic and sustainable.

We provide individual counseling to adults in Cape Coral, Fort Myers, and throughout Florida via telehealth.

What to Expect in Individual Therapy

Your first session is about getting to know each other. Your therapist will ask questions, listen deeply, and help you begin to identify what you're hoping to heal or change. From there, your treatment plan is built around you — your history, your nervous system, your goals. Sessions are typically 50 minutes and held weekly, though frequency may vary based on your needs.

At Embody Therapy, individual psychotherapy may incorporate:

A relationship built on trust, curiosity, and genuine care.

Individual Therapy May Be Right for You If…

You don't have to be in crisis to deserve support.

One of the most common things that keeps people from starting therapy is the belief that they don't have it "bad enough" — that their struggles aren't serious enough to warrant real help. But therapy isn't reserved for rock bottom. It's for anyone who's tired of feeling the same way, repeating the same patterns, or quietly carrying something they've never had the space to put down. If any of the below feels familiar, individual therapy at Embody Therapy & EMDR may be exactly what you've been looking for.

You feel stuck despite years of personal work or previous therapy

You struggle with anxiety, depression, or emotional dysregulation

You're dealing with the aftereffects of trauma — big or small

Your relationship with your body or food feels painful or out of control

You feel disconnected from yourself or the people you love

The People Behind Your Care

Licensed, compassionate, and genuinely invested in your healing.

At Embody Therapy & EMDR, you're never just a client on a caseload. Our team of licensed therapists brings clinical expertise, lived awareness, and a deep commitment to showing up fully for every person who walks through our door — or logs on from home. Each therapist has a unique background and specialty, and together we cover a wide range of needs so you can find the right fit for where you are right now.

  • EMDR Therapy — Go beyond talk therapy to heal trauma where it lives in the nervous system.

  • Intuitive Eating Counseling — Rebuild body trust and make peace with food using a compassionate, non-diet approach.

  • Couples Counseling — Strengthen communication, repair ruptures, and reconnect with your partner in a supported space.

  • Family Therapy — Navigate complex family dynamics and heal relational wounds together.

  • DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) — Build practical skills for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and healthier relationships.

FAQs

How do I know if individual therapy is right for me?

If you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or like something is off and you can't quite name it — individual therapy is likely a good fit. You don't need to be in crisis to benefit from one-on-one support. Many of our clients come to us simply wanting to feel more like themselves, understand their patterns, or finally work through something they've been carrying for a long time. If you're unsure, a free consultation is the lowest-stakes way to find out.

What's the difference between individual therapy and other types like couples or family therapy?

Individual therapy is a private, one-on-one space between you and your therapist — focused entirely on your experience, your goals, and your healing. Couples and family therapy bring additional people into the room and focus on relational dynamics between them. Some clients do both simultaneously; others start individually before exploring relational work. Your therapist can help you figure out what makes the most sense for where you are.

What happens in the first session of therapy?

Your first session is an intake — a chance for your therapist to get to know you, understand what's bringing you in, and begin building a picture of your history and goals. You won't be expected to have everything figured out or share everything at once. Think of it as the beginning of a conversation, not a performance. Most clients leave their first session feeling heard and a little lighter just from having said things out loud.

Do I have to talk about my childhood or past trauma?

What if I don't click with my therapist?

Only if and when you're ready. While understanding your history is often part of the therapeutic process, you are always in control of what you share and when. Our therapists are trained to follow your pace and create safety before going anywhere deep. You will never be pushed into territory you haven't consented to explore.

The therapeutic relationship is one of the most important factors in whether therapy works — and fit matters. If after a few sessions you don't feel like it's the right match, please tell us. We would rather help you find the right therapist — within our practice or elsewhere — than have you sit in sessions that don't feel right. Your healing comes first.
