Intuitive Eating Counseling in Cape Coral, FL

Healing your relationship with food starts with healing your relationship with yourself.

If you've spent years at war with food, your body, or both — you're not alone. Diet culture has convinced most of us that our bodies can't be trusted, that hunger is the enemy, and that thinness equals health and worth. Intuitive Eating counseling at Embody Therapy & EMDR is a compassionate, evidence-based alternative. It's not another plan to follow. It's a process of learning to listen — to your body, your hunger, your needs.

Who Intuitive Eating Counseling Can Help

You deserve a relationship with food that doesn't feel like a battle.

Developed by registered dietitians Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch, Intuitive Eating is a framework built on 10 principles that help you reconnect with your body's innate wisdom. At Embody Therapy, our counselors integrate Intuitive Eating with trauma-informed therapy to address the emotional and psychological roots of disordered eating — because food behaviors rarely exist in isolation.

Intuitive Eating is not about eating whatever you want with no regard for your wellbeing. It's about dismantling the diet mentality, rebuilding trust with your body, and developing a sustainable, peaceful relationship with food that doesn't consume your mental energy.

How We Approach Intuitive Eating Differently

We go beyond food. We heal the root.

At Embody Therapy, Intuitive Eating counseling is woven together with trauma-informed therapy. We recognize that disordered eating is often a coping mechanism — a way the body and mind have tried to manage pain, control, anxiety, or trauma. Our therapists use EMDR, ACT, and somatic awareness alongside Intuitive Eating principles to help clients heal at the root, not just change behaviors on the surface.

The People Behind Your Care

Licensed, compassionate, and genuinely invested in your healing.

At Embody Therapy & EMDR, you're never just a client on a caseload. Our team of licensed therapists brings clinical expertise, lived awareness, and a deep commitment to showing up fully for every person who walks through our door — or logs on from home. Each therapist has a unique background and specialty, and together we cover a wide range of needs so you can find the right fit for where you are right now.

Your Relationship with Food Is Connected to Everything

Explore the services that support whole-person healing alongside Intuitive Eating.

Healing your relationship with food rarely happens in isolation — it's woven into your history, your emotions, your nervous system, and your sense of self. At Embody Therapy, Intuitive Eating counseling is most powerful when it's part of a larger therapeutic picture. Whether you're working through trauma that lives underneath food behaviors, or rebuilding your inner world from the ground up, we have support for every layer.

  • EMDR Therapy — Process the underlying trauma, shame, and emotional pain that often drive disordered eating patterns at the root.

  • Individual Psychotherapy — One-on-one therapeutic support that works alongside Intuitive Eating to address anxiety, perfectionism, identity, and self-worth.

  • DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) — Build practical emotional regulation and distress tolerance skills that reduce urges to use food as a coping tool.

  • Couples Counseling — When food and body image struggles are affecting your relationship, healing together can be a powerful step.

"EmbodyTherapy feels like a safe haven—supportive, genuine, and truly life-changing."

FAQs

Is Intuitive Eating just "eating whatever you want"?

This is one of the most common misconceptions — and the answer is no. Intuitive Eating is not a free-for-all. It's a structured, evidence-based framework that helps you rebuild trust with your body's hunger and fullness cues, remove the shame and moral weight around food, and develop a sustainable relationship with eating that isn't driven by rules, restriction, or guilt. Gentle nutrition is actually one of the 10 principles — but it comes after the diet mentality has been dismantled, not before.

I've been dieting most of my life. Can I actually unlearn it?

Yes — and you're not alone. Most of our clients come to Intuitive Eating after years, sometimes decades, of chronic dieting. The diet mentality is deeply ingrained, and unlearning it takes time and compassion. This is exactly why we pair Intuitive Eating counseling with therapy rather than offering it as a standalone program. We address the emotional and psychological roots of diet culture's hold — not just the behaviors on the surface.

Is Intuitive Eating appropriate if I have a diagnosed eating disorder?

Intuitive Eating principles can be part of eating disorder recovery, but the approach looks different depending on where you are in your healing. Some eating disorder presentations require medical monitoring or a more structured treatment team. We will conduct a thorough assessment and discuss the most appropriate therapeutic approach for your specific situation. If a higher level of care is needed, we will help connect you with the right resources.

How is Intuitive Eating counseling different from seeing a dietitian?

What if I'm not sure I have disordered eating — I just feel really stuck around food?

Our Intuitive Eating counseling is provided by licensed mental health therapists, not registered dietitians — which means we approach it through a psychological and trauma-informed lens. We work on the emotional relationship with food, the underlying beliefs and experiences that drive eating behaviors, and the nervous system responses that connect food and safety. For some clients, working with both a therapist and a dietitian is the ideal combination — and we're happy to collaborate with other providers on your care team.

That's enough. You don't need a diagnosis or a dramatic story to benefit from this work. If food takes up more mental space than you'd like, if eating feels complicated or fraught, or if you've been in a restrict-binge cycle for years without knowing how to stop — Intuitive Eating counseling can help. A free consultation is a great place to start.
