Family relationships are among the most complex — and most impactful — of our lives. Whether you're navigating conflict, recovering from a rupture, supporting a family member through mental health challenges, or trying to break intergenerational patterns, family therapy offers a structured, supported space to do that work together. At Embody Therapy & EMDR, our family therapists are trained in trauma-informed approaches that honor every person in the room.
What Family Therapy Addresses
Every family carries its own story. Patterns passed down through generations, wounds that never quite healed, and dynamics that can feel impossible to change from the inside. Family therapy creates an outside perspective and a structured space to look at those patterns honestly, without blame and without anyone having to carry the weight of the conversation alone. Whether your family is navigating an acute crisis or a slow-building tension that's been simmering for years, the issues that bring families to therapy are almost always rooted in the same thing: a need to feel heard, understood, and connected. Our therapists are trained to hold space for every person in the room while helping the family as a whole move toward something healthier.

How Family Therapy Works at Embody
A safe space for every voice in the room.
Family therapy sessions at Embody Therapy involve two or more family members meeting with a licensed therapist to explore relationship dynamics, patterns of communication, and shared or individual experiences that are impacting the family system. Sessions are 50-75 minutes and can be held in person in Cape Coral or via telehealth. Our therapists create an environment where everyone feels heard — not judged. The goal is never to assign blame, but to build understanding, repair connection, and develop tools that help the family move forward together.

Support Beyond the Family Room
Individual and specialized services that complement the family healing process.
Family healing often goes hand in hand with personal healing. While family therapy addresses the shared space between loved ones, we also offer individual and specialized services that support each person's journey on their own terms. Many of our clients find that combining family therapy with individual work accelerates growth and creates lasting change at every level.
-
Individual Psychotherapy — Personal, one-on-one support for each family member navigating their own healing alongside shared work.
-
EMDR Therapy — For individuals carrying unprocessed trauma that is showing up in family relationships and dynamics.
-
Couples Counseling — When the primary relationship at the center of the family needs its own dedicated space to heal and grow.
-
DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) — Practical skills for emotional regulation that benefit both individuals and the family system as a whole.
"EmbodyTherapy feels like a safe haven—supportive, genuine, and truly life-changing."
FAQs
Do all family members have to attend every session?
Not necessarily. The structure of family therapy sessions depends on the goals and needs of your specific family system. In some cases all members attend every session; in others, sessions may rotate or involve subsets of the family at different times. Your therapist will work with you to design an approach that makes sense for your situation.
What if one family member doesn't want to come?
This is very common. Family therapy can still be valuable even if not everyone is on board right away. Sometimes one or two members beginning the process creates enough positive change that others become more willing over time. Your therapist can also help you navigate how to approach resistant family members with care rather than pressure.
Can family therapy help if there's been a significant rupture or betrayal?
Yes — in many cases, family therapy is specifically designed for this. Whether it's a breach of trust, a major conflict, a disclosure, or a period of estrangement, therapy provides a structured and supported space to begin the process of repair. Healing isn't guaranteed, but having a skilled, neutral third party can make conversations possible that wouldn't be otherwise.
How is family therapy different from couples counseling?
Is family therapy available via telehealth at Embody Therapy?
Couples counseling focuses specifically on the romantic relationship between two partners. Family therapy involves two or more family members — which may include parents and children, siblings, or multigenerational family members — and focuses on the broader family system and dynamics. Some families engage in both; others find that one addresses their needs fully.
Yes, family therapy sessions can be held via telehealth for Florida residents. All participants simply need to be in a private space with a stable internet connection. In-person sessions are also available at our Cape Coral office.
